Good idea, always ask, every time. Some tellers have them in their drawers, so dont give up if you asked one teller! Last time i asked at a bank, the manager overheard and said "I have 800 of them in the vault."
Damn, 800! Did you buy em all? Getting 10% on your money at a coin dealer, which about what they'd pay (I think) seems like a pretty good return to me. And to the OP, I'm not sure how I'd ask the teller. I once asked if they had any Eisenhower dollars and got a look from the teller like I asked if they had any moon rocks or something. Then I said "You know, the large dollars?" And she said "Ohhh the really old ones, no of course we don't have any of those." I decided it was best to stop there, but I felt like describing an Ike dollar since she obviously was not aware that they exist. So maybe you should talk to a teller older than 30, if you can.
No I did not get them. At the time I didn't have the $800 to tie up into Ikes. A couple weeks later I did have the money, and it was too late. So I will just assume they were all very beat up clad ikes! That makes me feel better.
Same here Merc. And of course Peace Dollars and Morgans, but no luck yet. It would be sweet to find a type-2 in circulation. Congrats on those finds.
Ah, yeah, I don't have any pics, haha... well, let me check my phone? I sold one to someone here, so I'm sure I have pics of that one somewhere. EDIT: None on my phone... AHA! The cut on the cheek is bad enough, imho, for the second to get bodybagged. The one I sold was the first, don't have any pictures of the third... yet.
I thought this link might be relevant. Looks like you got a good deal on the Ike, according to this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QynbFONcvPs&feature=related
I bet most of us wish we could have learned a lesson for only $6. $6 for a learned lesson you got a bargain!
There were a very few 1974 D 40% silver made by mistake. San Francisco would send rejects, like blanks not up to snuff, to Denver. Occasionally something they shouldn't use would slip in. Examples would include the 1970 D quarters on dime stock and 1969 D - 1972 D type B proof artwork dies. Edit #2: OOPS, I fell into the trap, again, of thinking page 1 was the complete post. Lee covered most of this on page 2.
