Can someone tell me what in the world may have happened to this penny. On the obverse, the rim is split on both sides. The reverse is full of oddities. The "T" is the only letter completely missing and once I looked closer, there is definitely faint letters in several different areas.
1) misaligned die, no added value. Very common, unless it is extreme. 2) slight greased die, see note above.
Is there a possibility that due to the nature of the T missing from a grease struck error, that the excessive striking pressure caused a double strike?
There's no evidence of a double strike. And a double strike will not necessarily cause finning. Increased striking pressure has nothing to do with extra strikes. As to the cause of the finning, there wasn't enough grease (if that's indeed why the T is missing) present to have been responsible for an increase in effective striking pressure. Heavy layers of grease can elevate effective striking pressure, however.
I guess my main question then is where do all the faint letters come from and what causes this to happen?
The beard appears to squigly and also looks like someone tried to sign it while the metal was still hot.
Blank Planchets are not hot when struck. They are room temperature when fed into the chamber to be struck by the Hammer and Anvil Dies.
The 1973 cent at the top of this thread has a very common, and very minor, mis-aligned die. Good eyes to spot it, but it does not carry any premium as an error, because it's so minor (some MAD's look like they are off center by 5%-10%), and so easily found on all denominations like this.
First, welcome to the neighborhood! Like paddy said, you need to start your own thread and post good photos of the area that you suspect is wrong. Chris
Hello my name is Mike and I have a 1944 wheat penny missing a number 4 aT and an L on the front side and on the back on missing almost whole part of CEnt and middle part of (unit a ates of ica) do to type of crease on penny??
Welcome to the neighborhood, Michael! It sounds like it might have been struck with grease-filled dies, but it would be best if you started your own thread, making sure to include photos. Chris
To make your own thread, go to the top of this one and see the HOME>Forums>coin forums>error coins click on the words error coins and the list of threads in this section will show. Notice that there is a blue box to the right that says | Post New Thread| . Click on that and you can type your input. Try to make it interesting rather than common, Common : What is this and How much is it worth? Interesting: There seems to be missing letters on my Lincoln cent. Die problem? Best of luck. Jim
