IF it was indeed aluminum, it would be significantly lighter than a normal penny.

And sound way different, like a soft "Plink" when dropped dropped. I have some aluminum world coins and they are almost as light as feathers...

Plated, painted, contaminated or just plain dirty. The coins should normally weigh 3.11 grams with an aluminum one being much lighter. I know of no off metal strikes for 1973 cent, including aluminum.

The other option to be explored if made it past weight tests would be off-stock, off planchet, or struck on a foreign blank. 99.9999% positive that it is one of the former though.

Hi and welcome to CT. At some point that penny was plated to make it look aluminum. It has seen so much wear and tear from circulation a lot of the plating is worn off and dirty. Don't be fooled by this. It's worth face value. Spend it and don't waste any more of your time for something that's only worth a cent.

Hello Dave. Even though the 1974 Aluminum Cent was minted in 1973 they used Dies to strike the Cent with the year 1974. Here is some more information to help you understand better why your Cent is not what it "appears" - regards :watching:

Definitely plated at one point but it is starting to wear off.
