Well done @Gunner1944 thats a good find. I am leaning towards 008, the notching on IGWT, kind of gives it away.
I can't tell the difference between 003, 006 and 008. OP image blown up 300% makes it easier to see (click on it).
If one looks at coppercoins.com or USAcoinbook.com or any professsional listing you will not find a listing except for the DDO-001 or possibly DDO-002 ( which are usually true DD coins.) Back many years ago the "DD" were almost always a die deterioration event. But the owners of these sites were trying to out compete each other ( my suspicion)....and many still do. Check your professional graders listings of doubled die coins and see if any -003,004- etc. are there Jim
For instance here are the ones recognized by coppercoins.com Variety listings : 1972P-1DO | 1972P-1DR | 1972D-1DO | 1972D-1DR | 1972D-1MM | 1972S-1DO | 1972S-1DR | 1972S-1MM |
You can think of it that way, or you can look at them as a die variety that has many different stages to each and every collectible die pairing, Yeah, they may be minor, still fun Picks and change finds.
Am I misunderstanding this post? PCGS and NGC both list 9 of them for 1972P, CONECA lists 10, and coppercoins shows 5.
No, you aren't. Raw examples are hard to come by, add in the die markers when documenting, and you find yourself with work to do.
@desertgem said "you will not find a listing except for the DDO-001 or possibly DDO-002", so I don't know what they meant by that. They seem to be implying that there are a lot of bogus listings "trying to out compete each other", but what other professional graders/listings are there?
I agree with your assessment. Not only do I prefer Coppercoins setup but you can see where they stopped “competing” and narrowed attributions.
