<p>
I have had this 1972 Kennedy Half-Dollar for about 30 years and have never seen any other coin like it. I received it when I was requesting Kennedy's and Ike's from my bank to give my four kids as part of a reward system. One of the coins was a 1972 Kennedy that stood out immediately as visibly 'odd' compared to the others. Rather than the usual copper stripe around the outer edge of the coin, there are 8x equally-spaced tiny copper-centered inserts at the edge of the planchet. </p><p> </p><p><a href="https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipOP9NRHzicrrS3xDeyEz7gZ_tCC4rfS0S3xJjVx" target="_blank" class="externalLink ProxyLink" data-proxy-href="https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipOP9NRHzicrrS3xDeyEz7gZ_tCC4rfS0S3xJjVx" rel="nofollow">https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipOP9NRHzicrrS3xDeyEz7gZ_tCC4rfS0S3xJjVx</a></p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNPcOLr72T8BI4ympJqU1T2TNkX82ri6CsWCB9_" target="_blank" class="externalLink ProxyLink" data-proxy-href="https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNPcOLr72T8BI4ympJqU1T2TNkX82ri6CsWCB9_" rel="nofollow">https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNPcOLr72T8BI4ympJqU1T2TNkX82ri6CsWCB9_</a></p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNzrjr2qAcnnM-ESlmeb0OC9GvFoa5gTa5N_Mmn" target="_blank" class="externalLink ProxyLink" data-proxy-href="https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNzrjr2qAcnnM-ESlmeb0OC9GvFoa5gTa5N_Mmn" rel="nofollow">https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipNzrjr2qAcnnM-ESlmeb0OC9GvFoa5gTa5N_Mmn</a></p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipO_Jjd620AGjD-hyh_Sjcgm6yui_ilys5-5tjh5" target="_blank" class="externalLink ProxyLink" data-proxy-href="https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipO_Jjd620AGjD-hyh_Sjcgm6yui_ilys5-5tjh5" rel="nofollow">https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipO_Jjd620AGjD-hyh_Sjcgm6yui_ilys5-5tjh5</a></p><p><br /></p><p>(The unusual Kennedy is on the left with a typical one on the right for comparison.)</p><p><br /></p><p>They're also visible as an texture change from the obverse and reverse of the coin at the raised edge as well. I have never been able to find anything on any Kennedy, or other 1972 mint set or special minting that could account for this uncommon planchet or finish in 30 years. Can anyone shed some light on what this is or what it is worth?
