Found a 1972 D cent without the FG initials on the reverse. Is this an error for that year coin? The VDB initials on the front are weak but there.
dchjr, have a look at this thread, I posted this one a few months ago, same deal, 1972 D (No FG) https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1972-d-lincoln-with-no-fg-on-reverse.271279/#post-2284424
I'm not so ready to dismiss these as grease strike thru or over polishing......only my humble opinion.....
Yep, same thing. I do find some that look like they're gone, but under a loop you can see slight images. Those I would guess are polished away or worn off.
Did you have a look at my pics? I have access to a high res Keyence camera at work. I tried to find traces of the FG, and could not find any....also, you would think I would see polishing lines in the area.....could not find any. You would also think that the edge of the building/Memorial near the FG would be a bit weak, but yet it still looks sharp....
On the contrary, one would expect that light image on a greaser rather than a polished die. The recesses in the die are tapered, so the stroke of the letter will grow thinner as you polish and to the very end will still show depth & taper. A greaser, on the other hand, fills the recess in the die and even when completely full usually shows a full-stroke but very faint outline under magnification.
