Found a 1972 D cent without the FG initials on the reverse. Is this an error for that year coin? The VDB initials on the front are weak but there.

Thanks. Didn't see it listed as an error, but wasn't sure.

I'm not so ready to dismiss these as grease strike thru or over polishing......only my humble opinion.....

Did you have a look at my pics? I have access to a high res Keyence camera at work. I tried to find traces of the FG, and could not find any....also, you would think I would see polishing lines in the area.....could not find any. You would also think that the edge of the building/Memorial near the FG would be a bit weak, but yet it still looks sharp....

Yes, I did look. They are a lot better than mine.

On the contrary, one would expect that light image on a greaser rather than a polished die. The recesses in the die are tapered, so the stroke of the letter will grow thinner as you polish and to the very end will still show depth & taper. A greaser, on the other hand, fills the recess in the die and even when completely full usually shows a full-stroke but very faint outline under magnification.

The only one worth much at all is the 1969-D no FG.
