OK. I'll state for a fact that it is indeed a 1971-D Type 1 Friendly Eagle Variety FS-901. Possibly MS66 but more than likely an MS65 since the MS66's can go for upto $500 each. Struck from worn dies which is typical of the FEV but its not a grade limiting factor. I'd submit it without hesitation and report back the grade from PCGS. NOTE: Instead of concentrating on the shape of the earth which, IMO, can be a faulty and fruitless endeavor, instead concentrate on the shape of the Gulf of Mexico. The FEV has a unique shape. Follow that with a look at the Islands. a string of 4 which jumps to 7 on better struck examples. Look at the Eagles tail feathers. The feather vane runs straight down the center of the top feather. On Type 2 coins, it rests on the bottom of the feather. Lastly, look at the crater on the top right instead of focusing on the crater below it. The FEV Crater has a distinct bump in the middle of it which almost appears like a rock is falling off. * - the Above images were created when this die was still commonly known as RDV-006 (Reverse Die Variety 006). The name has bounced around a couple of times from Friendly Eagle Patter to Friendly Eagle Variety to 1971-D Type 1. I always considered it as Type 2 since: 1. Type 2 is commonly associated with the more expensive IKE's 2. The variety was only discovered in 1999 well after the term Type 1 (for the reverse style) was deeply entrenched into the numismatic community. (i.e. 1972 Type 1, 1972 Type 2, 1972 Type 3 where Type 1 directly corresponds to the reverse type of the first known die design.
