Hey all you eisenhower specialists...I believe i fished a friendly eagle out of my LCS bins and thought i would share here to authenticate... Also a possible value as I may end up selling it when the outdoor flea market kicks off again. Thats when i transform to a hot shot dealer after collecting all winter. THANX... you guys are awesome!
Sorry, I do not think it is. The biggest giveaway is that the earth is not round, if it was a FEV that earth would be round not flat on one side. Sorry about it not being a FEV but it is still a nice BU Ike. Good luck, I hope you find one!
Actually after seeing more diagnostics I think it could be, the rest of it looks like it could match up to the FEV. I think the earth could be the photo angle. The only way to tell would be to check with it in hand here. Check here http://ikegroup.info/FEV.htm
It matches up but i guess i was looking for confirmation... I was also wondering what on earth does something like this go for?? I dont plan on sending it in unless you guys think i should
Yep! I think you got the FEV. after seeing new photos I think it matches up. If you want to send it to get graded to ANACS, they are best for that kind of thing. I think the coin itself is worth $60, depending on how much you payed you could should send it. If you payed anything under $30 it means you will not lose money.
You mention the earth not being round... its really really grainy in that area but looks better than a normal '71d... also i dont see the apollo vehicle there either.. is it because of the graininess?? Or is it a different variety than your normal??
I paid a whopping $2.40 for it... i must have looked through 150 '71Ds b4 stumbling across this one... also its probably ms64 @ best so idk if worth sending in.. how much should i put on the price tag b4 sellimg?? Heck if anyone here wants it shoot me a pm!!
It was struck by a deteriorating die, some details aren't as clear. The earth is better than a normal '71d. Everything else matches. I think it is FEV
Me too coinman... i have a few i was planning on sending in anyway... i just wish i knew how to grade these darn things so i had an idea of what to expect... I was shocked to see all the neat varieties within this series!! Ive actually found 2 '72 type 2s one was AUish the other was probably ms60-61... I traded them so the search continues.....
OK. I'll state for a fact that it is indeed a 1971-D Type 1 Friendly Eagle Variety FS-901. Possibly MS66 but more than likely an MS65 since the MS66's can go for upto $500 each. Struck from worn dies which is typical of the FEV but its not a grade limiting factor. I'd submit it without hesitation and report back the grade from PCGS. NOTE: Instead of concentrating on the shape of the earth which, IMO, can be a faulty and fruitless endeavor, instead concentrate on the shape of the Gulf of Mexico. The FEV has a unique shape. Follow that with a look at the Islands. a string of 4 which jumps to 7 on better struck examples. Look at the Eagles tail feathers. The feather vane runs straight down the center of the top feather. On Type 2 coins, it rests on the bottom of the feather. Lastly, look at the crater on the top right instead of focusing on the crater below it. The FEV Crater has a distinct bump in the middle of it which almost appears like a rock is falling off. * - the Above images were created when this die was still commonly known as RDV-006 (Reverse Die Variety 006). The name has bounced around a couple of times from Friendly Eagle Patter to Friendly Eagle Variety to 1971-D Type 1. I always considered it as Type 2 since: 1. Type 2 is commonly associated with the more expensive IKE's 2. The variety was only discovered in 1999 well after the term Type 1 (for the reverse style) was deeply entrenched into the numismatic community. (i.e. 1972 Type 1, 1972 Type 2, 1972 Type 3 where Type 1 directly corresponds to the reverse type of the first known die design.
Thanx calvin or is it hobbs?? Been a long time since i read that strip... aaaaahh memories.... seriously though that was a great explanation... ill be on the lookout for these here on out... no tellin how many ive let slip by
