The reason I brought up the subject of 'strike doubling' being different then 'machine doubling' is that the person who coined the phrase said that he was mistaken in using that phrase along with machine doubling based on false information given to him by a Mint official.
Fish Don't give up. It gets very frustrating at time I know. I go through 50 dollar bags of cents at a time, and if I am lucky I may find one or two minor column doubling every two bags. When I first started I was as confused as you about Machine Doubling and a true Doubled Die, and sometime still am. As far as some of the doubling on the websites (coppercoins, coneca, etc) I still have a hard time looking at the photos and seeing the doubling they are talking about. Heck I have looked at the cherrypickers guide I don't know how many times banging my head against the wall trying to see exactly what they are considering doubling. So please don't give up. It takes lots and lots of patients and then eve some more. Dave
Well, I understand your frustration. I've spent years looking for doubled dies on Lincolns. Over time, I simply hoped to find anything. :headbang: That said, I think this coin shows some pretty clear markers for machine doubling, as discussed already. Many years ago, I gave up on error and die variety collecting because I was given erroneous information that got my hopes up. I've renewed my interest in the hobby because of experts who helped me the difference between die varieties, errors, and simple damage. It's very hard finding die varieties on Lincolns. You could also try your hand at finding doubling on world coins. I find many cool doubled dies. Good luck!
Trust me dude, if I gave up after just the crap I post sometimes, then I would have quit along time ago. I am just now getting lucky. But it took a alot of posting of what I thought was doubling just to find out it wasn't. I really only get lucky about %15 of the time. And some of the coins I don't post now, because I have learned through trial and error what was and what wasn't.encil:
The other thing is sometimes certain people on this site can be a little rude about how they are trying to explain something. Ignore those people, because they are either 1) just jerks by nature, or 2) forgot what fun it can be to still find things in this world that most people don't have a fuc...g clue about. I go to my bank and the tellers ask why I ask for FED rolls only. I try to explain it to them, but most of the time it is useless to try. HAVE FUN WITH IT!
