Not much premium in the variety at all. There may have been at one time or another back in 1972 afer the differences were discovered, but none recently. Speculation is that all the proofs made in 1971 (2,180 in September and 1,219,990 in December) were of the Straight Peg Leg Variety. After noticing that the leg faded after extensive use, the serif was added and 2,806,244 were produced in March of 1972 followed by 540 in May 1972 along with 236,820 in June of 1972. (Source: January 2008 Numismatist article "PegLeg IKEs" by the IKE Group. www.IKEGROUP.org ) So, adding the figures up, 28% of the total production would have been the pegleg variety. Additionally, following the theory, the Pegleg proofs would be the only true 1971 Proof coin. One more item to think about, the 1974 proof coin was of the serifed variety but die abraded peglegs have been found. The same is true with 1978. Given that fact, there could very well be die abraded versions of the 1971-S Proof coin.
Very interesting thread. And great photos. I learn something new every time I come here to CoinTalk. Now to go back and look at my Ikes.
Have you looked yet and if so, what did you find? My absolute, most useful ever tool has been my stereo microscope which I truely believe that every serious coin collector should own. A scope with its own lightsource enables you to see (and photograph) far more than any loupe could ever allow. Without my scope, I'm like a one legged man in a butt kicking contest!
I found these post googling peg leg.I wanted to know about them too, because I sent 25 brown Ikes to ANACS for their 10 dollar special. And I just read where 18 of them are peg leg variety.About 6 1971S proofs and the rest 1972 S proofs. How do you like me now?just kidding.I'll assume the popularity of these coins has not changed since the beginning. And I am not sitting on a gold mine. But just leveled one paying for grading.Speaking of gold, after getting only spot price for some on ebay,I'd been better off going to the pawn shop. The fees were doubled after e bay and pay pal both got their take. Then there was mailing insurance.Yep,the pawn shop would of been the best place to go after all.
I think almost all the proof 1972-S were peg leg, and for the 1971-S proof between 5-10% - as far as premium there is not much at this time, but you may get 30-50% premium which is not saying alot because it is a low valued coin. The big payday pegleg is the uncirculated silver 1971-S and it is the only one in the Cherrypickers guide
