Possibly some PMD, but there seems to be more here too. Over-polished die? weak strike? struck through grease? lamination flaws? maybe all the above? or...? 20180421_132348_HDR.jpg

At the bank, in a batch of other Ike's

It looks like a bad fake to me. I'm probably wrong but that's just what it looks like to me.

Of what? Is there a genuine Ike variety like this? I've been reading through the Ike Group site and haven't come across anything... yet

I'd like to say a fake also but not really sure. Possibly something drastic got in the way of a complete strike. Have you weighed it yet? (24.59 grams or thereabouts) I'm not leaning towards over polishing as it's just too drastic.

A bad fake of an Ike dollar...

Also thought fake. Check and see if it is silver.
    Check the weight.
Although, if it is a fake, I would certainly keep it for a dollar.

Confirmed fake. Thanks guys, good call. Weight=17.79g. weighed a real one and get 24.47g.
I've got a fun find for a buck, learned something, and a great (but embarrassing) story to go with!

Nothing embarrassing at all. You picked up the ball, ran with it and learned something new.

    Agree with @tommyc03
Kind of a cool find for a dollar. Definitely would have a place in my collection :) Glad we could help (also glad I wasn't wrong hahaha)

Yes, a learning opportunity. Take a close look at that reverse; that's a classic, if a bit exaggerated, example of "sinking devices", where the design seems to disappear under the field as though it's rising water.

Spend enough time looking on eBay, especially for classic commemorative halves, and you'll see more examples of this.

Good find -- thanks for posting it here!

Agree that it looks like a counterfeit, all 1971 S's should be 40% silver anyway

"Sinking devices", thanks for that! Can you elaborate on the cause of this phenomena?

The program was unable to read the true depth of field, and produced a copy of it without any relief.

I'm afraid I can't. I've only seen the effect on a number of fakes, and seen it discussed here. I don't know what causes it.

I would have guessed someone cleaned it in a tumbler - like all those fun YouTube videos teach you how to do.
