    Just environmental damage.

    FYI - There is no "outside coating" on a nickel. The composition is homogenous throughout

    Kennedy Halves, Quarters and Dimes have clad layers.. Nickels are solid nickel ;)

    And post 1982 Cents are Copper Plated Zinc.. Not Clad. Different process.
