1971 Lincoln Cent Mint Mark Error?

    Looks like it took a hit on the D, smooshing it.

    an why dont you believe it's PMD? what else could it be? look at all the damage to the date, you believe the date could take all those hits an the mm not get hit?

  6. After I posted and looked at the date again, I figured it might be PMD. Especially, the 1. What could caused that type of damage. Just curious.

    contact with something hard causes it -
    it's called a 'hit' or contact mark.

    There's no way to know exactly what it
    was that caused the damage.

    Copper is soft, we see this often here. if it was on the ground and someone walked on it, could do that. used to drag my steps but I usually see coins.

    Look at the entire area near the mintmark. You can see the damage.
