Can anyone explain the red color of this 1971 D penny? I know it's damaged but was just curious as to the color. I also compared it to another copper 71D and it just looks different. Thanks

Nothing different about it except where
it's been in the past 50 years.

copper cents can turn into different
    colors depending on numerous factors,
such as where the copper cent has been,
what has been done to it, etc.

    What you see is normal.

Thank you Mr. Weinberg and Jonathan Layne. I appreciate the information as I'm still learning. I appreciate all the help this site has given me since I started a year and a half ago. I didn't realize how much there actually was to the coin collecting hobby.
