    Update to the story:

I have removed the thrid party packaging and have photogrphed it again for you to see the original government packaging. Yes is has the red stripes. It clearly shows that it has NOT been tampered with:

Have you emailed anyone about this yet?

No I have not.....I was just trying to get it to the point where I can prove that this is a legitimate mint set error. Should I now e-mail this to David Bowers which you suggested?

    Hi All,

The coin is NOT an error of any kind. It is the coin that is important and not the set.

This is a simple packaging error and it happens more frequently than you might think. You sometimes get a set with two quarters and a dime missing, for example.

This is a case where a Philly half got mixed in with the Denver halves during the packaging process.

Keep in mind that the coins are all packaged in one place. They are not packaged in Denver and then matched up with a bunch of coins from Philadelphia. This kind of thing is relatively common in the overall scheme of things.

What surprises me most is that this had not been pointed out before my post.

I Am Sorry to say that a packaging mistake doesn't even really add to the value of the set as a whole.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Thank You Bill for clarifying this issue....I am not looking for value in the set. I just wanted to know if this could happen and how. I am new to this business of coin collecting and am having a ball with just being able to find something like this. Is there anywhere else that I could look to find more information on this kind of error? How offen is this reported? Is this somewhere that this can be reported to? (an agency or society?) How does it get into the "Red Book" on coin set values? (I have never seen this reported in the "Red Book")........Thanks

    Hi,
As I mentioned, it is somewhat, surprisingly common. There is no place to report these to as they are not errors, as such. They are more of a novelty than anything else and they are not even really collected. many people actually return these sets to the Mint for replacements since they wanted a full set for the year.

It would never be in the Redbook either.

For those with the right equipment, these are easily manufactured outside of the Mint. That is the reason why these types of things have no real numismatic signifigance. ( I could never spell that word:)

    Thanks,
    Bill
