With all the die deterioration on that coin, you're lucky to be able to determine that it is a half dollar. Chris
Not a random guess,. More like a degree of uncertainty. Die deterioration? Yes, extensive! But I also see split serifs as indicated by arrows. Much easier to see when moving the coin in hand. To me it closely resembles this: http://varietyvista.com/12 Kennedy Halves/DDO Detail Pages/1971DDDO009.htm
It does resemble the 71D DDO-009. Here are some photos of the hair in front of the forehead, hair under the B in LIBERTY, hair on top of the head, and hair behind the head from the 71D DDO-009. Maybe you can confirm yours using these photos. Larry Nienaber
I'm not sure of the exact variety, but the coin most certainly displays genuine doubling and no just artifacts from die deterioration.* Edit: I didn't see the OP's response clarifying this before posting. My bad.
Call me a curmudgeon, if you want, but this is an illustration of what I would call "flyspeck collecting," the search for varieties that you need incredible magnification to collect.
Wiles had pictures up for the 1971-D DDO-009 in stage (D) and (E) linked below: http://www.varietyvista.com/12 Kennedy Halves/DDO Detail Pages/1971DDDO009.htm
