Thanks Jim, your correct on the Youtube thing I see many types of Doubling on thare... so as the new guy that has no idea everything is suspect and the hopes of finding some cool coins... Im not doing this for $ my 14 yr old Daughter and I started lookin for coins after she had a Accident and while she was laid up I thought this would help kill some time wich it has... She has lost the thrill as I keep on looking... Is there a place that I can post suspect coins without posting on the forum? Have lots of questions just don't want to post all of them here. Many Thanks C
I think posting them here is perfectly okay. Do you own a Red Book or the Cherrypickers Guide? Both can be had for around $10 - $15 (used). I think if you did a little research before posting, you'll have no problems. Welcome to CT.
Doubled Dies are created during the die manufacturing process - Mechanical Doubling is created during the coin striking (coin manufacturing) process. The OP's coin is a 1970-S. At this time the Mint in a separate independent process added Mintmarks by punching them by hand using a mallet and steel punch into finished dies one at a time (individually). The OP's coin is showing identical doubling in both the Mintmark and the Date. But the Mintmark and the Date were added to the die in two separate independent pocesses in the manufacture of the die. So if you think about it - the most logical step for creating this identical doubling would be the coin striking (manufacturing) process - Mechanical Doubling.
