Good morning! Question on this 1970-s penny(part of a proof set). Is the doubling on the date from strike doubling or die deterioration? Is it common for a proof set to have this type of issues? Thanks.
Your first image has too much glare on it which often makes it confusing for some people to determine whether it is doubling or just an artifact of the lighting. Your second image does not show any indication of doubling. Chris
Sorry about that. I'm pretty bad at taking pictures. So I took a couple more pics, however, I don't know if it's any better. I also took a picture the initials on the reverse. Looks funky. Anyway, have a look and see what you make of it.
There are several doubled dies listed in the CPG for this date. But, all the doubled dies are for the large date. There is a large date and small date variety for this year proof. Need to see a pic of the whole coin both sides. This will help determine small or large date.
That's actually what I was trying to line up earlier. To be considered the small date type, the top of the # 7 should line up evenly with the rest of the numbers, right? I'll try to get the coins out of the casing and maybe be able to get a better image of both the obverse and reverse of the coin. Should be ok to be taken out of the case? Later. Looks like a large date to me. The curl on the 9 is pointing to the bottom of the 7 and not curled all the way around. The bottom of the 9 on the SD is pointy and on the LD it is blunt. The OP looks blunt. As for the weakly struck LIBERTY on SD's, IDK if that includes proofs.
