I just bought the 1970 Red Book (A Guide Book of United States Coins)....got it off Ebay for like $7 including S&H.

Wow...talk about a trip down memory lane. Just checking out the prices for Saint-Gaudens DE's.......DAMN !!!!! I know I was only 7 at the time, but why didn't I cash in my baseball cards at that time for a rare year !! :D

The 1927-D has no price (just a solid line, not sure what that means) and the 1907 UHR and 1907 HR Proof both go for 4 or 5 figures...but no other coin sold for over $1,000 !!

What's strange is that commons like 1924, 1927, and 1928 were actually expensive relative to the price of bullion. Didn't know that. Even in the UNC condition (probably MS63 equivalent, maybe MS65) the price was $110 (vs. $35 ounce official gold price). Even in VF -- which is like in the 40's -- they wanted $85 which was over 2x the official price.

Anything today for commons below MS62 is melt value and even MS65 is maybe 10-15% above the price of gold, not 3x.

Dave, I see Proofs from 1873-1883 going for $340 - $500. But the 1884 (Wolfson Sale, 1963) is at $8,750 and the 1885 Proof is $9,000.

UNC from $550 (1878 CC) down to $95, most years about $175.

Wow, you dealt with the Hunts ? I think Herbert is still alive, right ? Nelson and KC Chiefs owner Lamar passed on.

Yes Nelson and Bunkie before they rolled up on the silver market. Actually Christie's sold my Dad and I had 7 between us in at $40-60 each and had to buy the 82 and 83's for $1450 each to make set. Glad they're gone except to show grandkids they were cool. TY
    Now the 84's $550,000 and 85 is 2 million sold 2014 LOL

I met him in the 1970’s at a minor league field in Tulsa Oklahoma. To have been such a legend he was a truly humble and congenial fellow. And I bet at his age that he still could have struck out those upstart youngsters on that minor league ball team.

My mistake.....the price listed included cents for most years, but a few of the others didn't have 2 decimal places for cents and just used 4-figures.

The 1920-S, 1921, and then all from 1929-32 were all over $1,000...the 1931-D highest at $3,600. Maybe the 1927-D was higher but no price quoted. For 1933 it says None In Circulation :) ).

Yeah, even without your quantity, I thought having the 1970 book was good to have.

It followed a big decade of coin collecting (maybe the Golden Age of post-WW II Baby Boomers) and it also has coin prices from right before gold took off, the next-to-last year it was fixed at $35/oz.

Hey Vets....I take it that by-and-large when you saw UNC in The Red Book or in the CDN Newsletter and all those others, that it generally referred to the MS63 level ?

They didn't use the Sheldon Scale that much in books or newsletters until the TPG's came out ?

Think of what the prices would be in a 1960 Red Book.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

No, MS-63 was not in use in 1970. Did you read Tom Delorey's article I posted in the other thread? He was the first to use 63 in 1979 when ANACS opened. Prior to that, they really only used 60/65/70. UNC would have been considered "MS-60" in our interpretation of the scale - but that's not how they graded. It was UNC, BU, Choice BU - the grades were descriptors. Most of them didn't use numbers.

I would guess, on average, maybe half for the stuff trading above bullion prices.

I remember those days. Folks didn't argue numbers they argued UNC, BU, Choice BU and Gem.
