Actually no, not so much as that. It's one reason I hang out at ANA coin shows - to learn from those more knowledgeable than me. That and to interact with SERIOUS newbs, by working the Kid's Zone. You'd be AMAZED how many new hotshots have ages with one digit. Yes, they're not a dime a dozen, but I meet at least one or two Wunderkinder at each ANA show.

Wow if we could clone that attitude and implant it in some of the members here we would be dialed. VERY REFRESHING. (you sure that wasn’t a really big typo?) Nobody except me has that philosophy I’m sure of it!!!

No mistake. Look, I'm a smart-aleck on here, no doubt. And the "YouTube first, CoinTalk next" brand of newbs do get under my skin quite a bit. As do people who use CT to market their niches. But aside from my cranky persona on here, I'm really committed to BOTH learning and teaching the serious aspects of this hobby. One of the clubs I am in, the Chicago Coin Club, has the motto "Docendo Discimus", which translates to "We learn by teaching."

    Now how cool is that?!?!?

Very cool! I can’t do clubs I’ve tried. I just end up calling out all the unethical dippers and then get booted. They don’t like the name I use for them. It’s a compilation of two beloved names. Just fries anyone who dips for the wrong reasons. Can’t blame them, don’t dip for the wrong resons then. Oh is their a right reason? I digress. Yes I suppose there is a good reason to chemically alter the surface of the metal. I just can’t see it. I personally prefer brown Lincolns to gem brilliant. But I know that if I dipped my better dates then my collection would be worth 20 times what it is now, is that a good enough reason? Not for me but the SOME of the silver Guys WOW they can justify ANYTHING! Do you know how much harder it is to find a NICE AU coin than a Gem Brilliant? I can go to my coin shop right now and come home with roll after roll, thousands of Lincoln Memorials in Gem Bu. But if I want to buy a nice AU Lincoln I bet there are less than 20 or so you can buy at the shop. But in GEM BU the case IS ALWAYS FULL of GEM Bu singles for sale. Hundereds of them shinning up at the customers screaming take me home.

Yup, when demand can outright CREATE supply, as it often does in several niches of modern numismatics (like toners?), sumpin is up!

HOWEVER, part of the overabundance of BU coins can be explained by the break-up of BU rolls long held back, but recently opened.

I do feel sorry for you Silver Guys. Un altered Morgan dollars are hard to find I hear. Problem is that when they do come up they get dipped eventually and are no longer originals. If your gonna keep it dip it I guess. But most are dipped by people that JUST care that it is worth more after for higher resale purposes not because it looks better for them. I talked to a guy ON THIS SITE that told me he used to dip Hundereds of Morgan’s a DAY!! Wow I wonder where he keeps that collection it got to be thousands and thousands and thousands of chemically treated and ALTERED coins shot for good in my opinion.
Oh yea I do belive he’s is or has been a dealer I don’t know. THIS GUY CLEANS COINS TO MAKE THE MAXIMUM PROFIT FROM HIS INVESTMENT. PERIOD.
in some circles this is considered GOOD business. I don’t I call it taking advantage of people and screwing up historical artifacts. I’m sure this will start a storm.

I always forget about the NEW collecting style of today. Used to be we couldn’t sell our coins to anybody. There was no secondary market avalible. One or two coin shows a year on the West Coast I never made it to. I didn’t care how much they were worth I just collected because I liked them PERIOD!
Now every bodies so concerned about how much it’s worth, sheesh

I have a desire to "buy well", too. But I have an alternate time horizon to consider. I figure my remaining life expectancy at about maybe 10 more years, 15 tops. Just as likely, 5. But my son is also a coin nut, and his is probably 80+. I like to buy things I think will appreciate, but during HIS time horizon, not mine.

I've never quite believed this. The way many Morgans were stored SHOULD create SOME rainbow toned coins and MANY MANY pure white ones. I'm talking about our friends imprisoned in canvas for decades.

That said, while I do own some Morgans, it's not a series that interests me.

    Yup I know
yup I know. The difference is your buying to have an increased value in the future not buying to make rent tomorrow. It’s okay to expect your collection to increase in value but to employ nefarious tactics to make as MUCH money as possible on each coin as quick as possible is not you. As least I don’t think so.

The only time I sell ANYTHING is when I can't afford NOT TO, like generic bullion pieces in August of 2011.

... and if I had any, which I don't, Bitcoin any day now. Why? Same exact reason. It's going parabolic and people are openly asking when the bubble will burst. That means "very soon now".

I just reread this and you are the guy I needed when I was just starting. I almost got blown out of the Hobby when I was 12 by a WAY OVER DIPPED Morgan. I saved pop bottle money for a month and a half to buy that coin the shop owner new it was crap and overpriced but I didn’t. A little ANA training in the Kids zone would have prevented me from all that angst. Keep it up Kurt good for you.

The hobby has brought me decades of joy and knowledge. I feel an obligation to "pay it forward", but in ways of MY choosing. It took a near-death brain injury to focus my attention.

Glad you made it through on he ordeal. As you might have noticed I always try to be encouraging to those whom deserve and or need it. I don’t profess to be an expert, just an uneducated coin guy who likes to look at Lincolns and has seen a few in the past. I’m a in the trenches blue collar guy and VERY much a realist. Don’t ask me if your baby is cute if you have an ugly baby.

What do you think about these?
    1-Are the 81s misaligned dies?
2- I noticed the 'P' is filled in on the reverse of a coin - any thoughts?
3- The 'T' in Liberty has a notch - any thoughts?

I like your call on the 81’s is good. The die chip/break is a good one nice eye. And the liberty Coin id love have under my microscope it does appear that it could be notchy but the pic is inconclusive so its just a guess sorry. Better images of the last one please both sides full coin shots. Keep looking!
