Ok we'll I'm gonna hang on to it. Best way to preserve these is in a airtight right? Just any of them or do y'all suggest a specific one? I throw everything I want to keep in a 2X2 but I want to get some airtights for some of my best liked.
It's a pretty nice coin really. MS-64 easy. It needs an alcohol soak. It's a little PL so I'd put it at about the 94th %ile. It might look more PL under the haze.
I am planning on giving it a soak in olive oil for a while. I tried it out on the dime, nickel and quarter and they look a million times better. There's an ugly haze on it for sure that they all share.
I'd call it a high end 64, and it may get a 65 on a good day. It isn't worth sending in (and it doesn't appear to be PL).
Even if the dies were basined they are too eroded to really call the coin PL. But, I believe, that under the haze there may be very "flat" die wear. It looks like around the 3000th strike but this is very difficult to gauge since dies wear at different rates. Even a fast wearing die will wear more slowly if they don't develop full pressure on the strike.
Your best bet may be to buy a coin that has already been slabbed. I got a PCGS 1970-D half graded at MS63 for less than $35 and the MS65 1970s are running about $55.
