I got one today with my change and it seems like it’s made of at least some portion of silver. I’ll weigh it later on when I get home.

Pretty nice to find a silver key date coin in change. Your coin has spent most if not all of its life in storage, until its recent introduction into the wild. The 1970-D KHD was a "issued only in mint set" type of coin.
And yeah, where do you live?

I’m in San Francisco. So was there silver also in the 65-69 half dollars or is it just in the 1970 D specifically after 1964?

40% silver from 1965 to 1970 in half dollars.

Wow, I didn’t know that. I thought all silver stopped after 64’ for the regular coins.

I’m going to go back today and ask if I can buy any of the remaining Kennedy half dollars that they have in the register. I’m a well known customer there at the gas station. They will if they have more.

Nice find. Chances are it was a one off find and others from the roll will be regulars, but one can hope. Let us know if you buy more and all of them are 40%.

I asked him if he knew where they came from. He said an elderly lady came in and bought several dollars worth of merchandise with them. These were the only ones left. He estimates that I got about half of them ($5.00 worth). All but one is after 1970. But I got them anyways because they are in such outstanding condition for the years.
