    Hi Everyone,

I’m Laura and I’m new here. I found this interesting coin in my tip jar and I was wondering if you could tell me anything about it. Thanks. I did scroll through a few different pages but couldn’t find anything on copper quarters. Thank you for your time. Have a great weekend.

I believe that the links above should give you the answers you seek. Nice tip BTW as I see at least $80/$100 bucks here...possibly more!
Someone gave you a sweet tip.... Karma smiling on you hon. :)

    • You sure?that looks like ED to me,to have one on both sides is extremely rare.Im not saying it's impossible but just doesn't look right to me @paddyman98 what do you think.

Doesn't look right. Looks like obverse spent more time bathing in chemicals than reverse.

This looks as though it has been chemically manipulated to me... the pitting and lack of detail don't bode well...

Now looking closer at the obv. It looks to have been messed with.. I don't alway open thumbnails if the op doesn't post in full. Perhaps a weak acid ...was used. As pitting is present.

The image of the reeding shows signs of acid to me as they are very weak. Like eaten away

Also.. Missing Clad layer usually involves just 1 side (any side) of a clad coin. It's super extremely rare for just the copper core with no clad on both sides to be minted.

IMHO it's a environmental exposure toning issue ;)

Edit* or previously painted as stated by @alurid
Look at IGWT.. Build up of something in that area :yack:

Whatever it may be it's definitely not a Mint Error.

Looks damaged to me, like the outer layer has been stripped clean.

Then outer clad layer is 75% copper and 25% nickel. It's not unusual for a coin to react with things in the environment and discolored either from copper enrichment or nickel leaching out. Sorry, but you just have an environmentally damaged coin

Welcome to CoinTalk. This is where we offer free advice on any questions you may have on any coin.
Just remember this.. If it looks different, strange or weird that doesn't automatically make it a mint error. There are so many ways coins can be altered after they leave the US Mint.

Here are some true Missing Clad Layer errors from my collection. They occur just on one side. The other side looks perfectly normal. Depends how the blank planchet with the missing clad lands in the chamber to be struck by the minting dies.

The edge picture seems to show the Cu/Ni cladding

    Hi Laura, Welcome aboard.
Looks like you got the forum on a rollercoaster
    Original weight is 5.67 grams
Even discolored to this degree ,the weight will remain about the same.
Missing of one layer will be about 4.7 grams as the example of @paddyman98 shows
I believe your coin is just damaged but I’ll wait for the weight. Larry

    It's within weight tolerance.
Not a mint error of any kind.
