Hello fellow hobbyists, collectors, enthusiasts, etc. This is my first post. I'm just starting out and have been sorting through my change for the last few weeks, safe to say I'm having a very good time. No silver yet, crossing my fingers for some soon but in the meantime I've been examining my coins for errors and key dates, mostly trying to train my judgement. One of the most notable errors I've come across so far is on this nickel--I can't tell which date it's supposed to be. What would you call this error? And what year do you think it's from? Many thanks for viewing and I apologize if my formatting/imagery is poor. View attachment 1660063
Thanks for the reply. So the state of the text is a result of damage caused by rolling? I haven't seen anything very similar to this so far but now I'll know for the future.
Well, it's plainly a 1977. Interesting how the damage moved the metal around like that, on the second 7, but yeah... that's all it is. Post-mint damage.

@herculad …Welcome to Coin Talk. It is not any type of error. Yes, that is post-mint-damage, AKA: PMD. This means it was damaged after it left the Mint. There are finite ways that coins are minted, but there are a seemingly infinite number of ways to damage them. You would do well to study the minting process: …Go to doubleddie.com …John Wexler’s web site, and read all of the articles there. It will help you become a better collector quicker. Thanks for the replies and resources everyone. I'm going to continue researching and hopefully I'll have something interesting to show here soon.
