Maybe it’s just being with my thoughts elsewhere but how does a mint mark get under the date? It’s a 1969 and they were not on the master die like they are now. Please explain that to me. And remember, I got up late this morning and I just woke up from a nap but I’m really tired and ready to go back to bed. I very rarely take a nap but today is different.
? Seriously? Think about it. It is punched into the die. The the dies are used to strike a coin blank. Then there is a coin.
Yes Frank. I’m suffering from a complete failure as to how this would be a D mint mark under the date. It’s a 1969 coin and that was over 50 years ago and nothing to my knowledge has ever been found like this before for this date.
It's not worth quibbling over. See my post on the previous page. It's the wrong size, wrong shape, and not raised. If it was a mint mark, no matter how lightly punched it would still leave evidence where it crossed over the 6. And people have been scrutinizing 1969 looking for the doubled date variety for many years. Sure, new discoveries are always possible, but this is just a damaged coin.
