Hi, I'm new to coin collecting and ran across this penny. I've researched it and couldn't find anything about coins with the appearance of this one. I'm not sure if it happend when it was made or if it just got ruffed up while in circulation. The obverse side doesn't have any Knicks in it or anything. I'm still learning so any feed back would be awesome, thanks:)

I'd be willing to give you $0.01 for it. To be honest that's probably all it's worth. However, the observe may be an off-center strike.

It looks like a Misaligned Die strike on the Obverse which is fairly common. Not a major error and no major premium especially the condition it's in.

    First, welcome to the neighborhood!

Yeah, it looks like road rash (aka parking lot coin).

It's probably just a typo, but the obverse is the "heads" side, and if "Knicks" were that small, I'd bet against them in every game.

"Road Rash" is a specific numismatic term. :D

That part is simply damage, but the coin does look like a bit of a Misaligned Die. This happens when the top die (the "Hammer die") is a little off alignment, and strikes that side of the coin (usually the Obverse) off-center. This is in contrast to an "Off-center Strike" where both dies and the coin are out of alignment and both faces are off-center. Kinda common, and not a value-added feature.

You explained it better than I did on post #5! ;)

It's what I love best about numismatics - I can exercise my natural tendency to be pedantic, and it's a good thing. :D

Well first you need to tell your obverse from your reverse, it's the reverse that doesn't have the nicks. ;)

It's a little out of alignment. The obverse is just post-mint damage.

Lol thank you. So the obverse is the front side and reverse on the back? I honestly had no idea there was so much to coins before I started looking it up.

When you get stuck, they're "heads" and "tails." That's good enough. :)

So I heard there was a 1983 penny that was made out of copper and they stopped making them in 1982. How would I tell if a coin was copper?
