    I do realize this is machine double I just thought it still looked kinda neat because it made him smile.     This type of effect occurs when there is play in the equipment and tools used to coin the cent. The 'wobble' that occurs at the end of the die stroke results in the material from the devices (and in this case, the profile of the bust) to smear. The burnished material takes on different looks dependent on how much play is present at the time of the stroke. Normally, a single shelf. But it can be much worse.

    The bottom line: the damage occurs on a single stroke.
