1968-S Proof Washington Quarter Coneca: 1968-S RPM-003 FS-25-1968S-501 I started going through some bu quarters I got today found this one 6 into the batch... It looks like the just like the one in the CPG... Hopefully its correct.. Any comments, suggestions or feedback always welcome...
According to the CPG, the secondary mintmark is north of the primary mintmark. Maybe this is a new one. Chris
1968-S RPM-001 Description:S/S West (Proof) 1968-S RPM-002 Description:S/S South (Proof) <-- maybe its this one ?? 1968-S RPM-003 Description:S/S North (Proof); FS-25-1968S-501
It kind of looks like the RPM #2 S/S South pictured in Wexler's "The RPM Book" (1983). Larry Nienaber
Interesting! I have a whole '68 proof set and every coin has this s/s error. Trying just today to get info on this set. Haven't found the whole set yet with same error. Any info fellow collectors?
IMO, it is not the RPM but merely ghosting (Flat Field Doubling) caused by the fact that all proof coins are literally struck at least twice. I submitted one of these to James Wiles with the following response:\ Scratch that thought as I was looking at the FFD. You might have a winner. Better yet, forget everything I say on this particular subject since I had to go through 11 1968 Proof sets just to find a NORMAL Mint Mark. So, I really have no idea based upon my current inventory. Normal (The only 1 of 11) What I typically have which, yes, does have MDD at the base of the mintmark but the mid-loop and upper loops do not appear normal. So as you can see, my views are somewhat tainted.
The first RPM to me looks like Machine damage during the strikes. (Proof coins are struck more than once) Note the area of the same color to the south of the so called north? It doesn't look correct for this die. (same color denotes flatness and not rounded like a true device should fade from light to dark on the outline of the device.
