1968-S Cent(s) with odd spikes on the 9...error?

I have more than 1 and fewer than 10 1968-s BU cents that have 2 small, and 1 large raised spikes (?). It's identical on each of my examples. Is this die damage? An error? (apologies for poor picture quality)

    Your thoughts are appreciated. 20200601_142223.jpg

Correct. Damaged die and a run of coins from it in your lot. Note: the little nick on the right side of the 1 looked a little familiar to me. You aren't presenting the whole coin, so it might be worth exploring a little further. Check this link out:

In this die state, there isn't anything going on with the 9 like yours does. However, the nick on the 1 is either coincidentally there, or you might have an earlier die state, assuming you find doubling in the Motto. Given you mentioned BU examples, it's worth a second look.
