Yes, I agree, weighing of the coin is probably the first thing to do if there is a question as to the planchet used. The person must have some degree of competence, that is the primary variable. Apparently the subject jeweler is not the person for this.

In addition to no mention by the OP as to whether this jeweler is experienced in telling if a coin has been plated or not.

Jewelry it's not that difficult as I believe that plated bears no marking on the piece as most silver jewelry I buy, and even own, is marked .925 indicating sterling silver, just as gold would be marked with the karat on the piece.

Nothing is going to happen. The OP has left the room but everyone is still arguing with him.

I will pay $7K cash for this coin in a PCGS holder, 25cents without. My offer stands, get it graded.

the OP of these type of threads almost always disappear to never be heard of again. I always assume it means they took it to a dealer or sent it in, and it came back fake. Other wise, you'd think they'd have the decency to come back here and thank people who gave helpful advice.

It's a good thing that all of the coins in these threads are fake or there would be no rarities at all.

Still, every once in awhile you'd like to see someone come along with a true and honest find.

Well, there was the "railroad rim super-key Morgan" thread, and I seem to remember an off-metal strike thread recently that turned out nicely. Rarities only turn up, well, rarely.

Of course I would like to see some real rarities, I am a coin collector. Most of the time the value of a coin is immaterial to me, it is the rarity, beauty and history that I love. It just drives me nuts when someone will ask for help and then refuse to listen.

The brain is a selective thing, it tends to not hear what ones doesn't want to hear. No one can change it if the person has an attitude that you are trying to somehow spoil his excitement and perhaps as a group, we steal his coin by saying it isn't real. I tend to only post only once on these threads due to this.

I came to this sight on a google search of my coin find for a suggestion about what to do with it! Unfortunately it appears this web site is like many, full of a bunch of rude hateful people. I didn't know where to go with this, which is why I came here! Seeing auction prices for this at over $13,000 I was concerned about even touching it, much less taking it to some crooked coin dealer. I have done business with the jeweler my entire life, they are probably the most reputable jeweler in the world, and I happened to be near there to ask their opinion! I work about 80 hours a week so it is hard to find the time that all of you appear to think I have, saying I should do this and that, hateful, rude! Tonight I took it to The greatestateroadshow.com, because they happen to be in town and I saw the sign. They examined the coin and told me they could only go to $1,000.00 until I had it graded by PCGS, which was already my next move! This site is full of a bunch of haters, that automatically think everyone is a liar! I am signing up for my PCGS membership and sending in this rare coin for grading. Thank all of you who were kind enough to help. For everyone else who acts like I am here asking in some kind of fraud, well you probably know how you would feel, but I am to nice to say it!

Best wishes for your results. But I really only see a few requests for an accurate weight and suggestions to send it to PCGS or NGC for authentication. I do see some sarcasm, and although the rules do not eliminate it entirely, we do try to moderate it. That is the reason your post is here also. My suggestion for TPG still stands, and no one put time limits on it, as it matters not whether you send it in tomorrow or 10 years from now, But you are the one who seemed in a hurry. I am sure the results will be the same either way. I hope your trust in your jeweler and the greateststateroad show is still justified when it returns. Best of luck.

You read my posts from the beginning? What statement would imply I was in a hurry instead of simply asking for advice? I then gave an update about my lifelong trusted jeweler taking a look at it because I was right there and trusted them to check it. Then all this hatred bashing! Makes no sense, seems like this site is for a bunch of bullies who have no respect for the amateur guy asking for help! That is too bad, because I am asking for advice, and only still post here because I feel obligated after asking for advice. A few people were nice, stress FEW, otherwise I would never post an update on this. I wonder how many great coins get discovered only to go back into hiding after the owner is abused here? I was close, but I will keep you updated since I originally posted here. I will never visit this site and post again regardless of what I find.

You can very easily shut up all the doubters and "haters". Submit the coin and when you get the results post it.
Coming back on here and posting what you did will only get you more of what you got previously.

Believe me, if you have a slabbed 1965 silver quarter to show you will get congrats.

Sorry, you feel that way, and I hope it works out for you, but the odds are against it, sorry but true. As far as reading every post ~ yes I did at that time and once again, and I see none of the "hatred" you see. perhap some ill mannered folks, include me also if you wish, who read your first posts that you were sure of what you had and wanted to know how to maximize your profit. You didn't want to know really what we thought of the coin, you "knew" it was real. ( Posts 7,11,31 ) and you were referred to TPG, Trusted coin dealer, Teletrade ,etc. ( posts # 9,13,15,18,38,51,53, etc.). The only "intrusive" questions we asked was the weight which the jeweler must have done. There are fakes and counterfeits galore out there, some so good it takes very specialized equipment to determine. That is why we referred you to PCGS or NGC. I doubt seriously that the jeweler has a XDRF like them, but he should have a sensitive scale to weigh the fractional carat diamonds. As far as the motel gold buyers... I saw no one that posted hatred, just straight forward doubt and desire to help you take a "possible rarity" forward. Anyway ,there was no abuse, we were trying to be honest in our comments ( at least in the posts I enumerated ), but we all have decisions to make, there are several other forum, maybe you will find some "help" there.
