1965 Silver Dime?? MS66!!!

Discussion in 'Error Coins' started by Jesse Gillispie, Nov 30, 2017.

  1. Hi All, I am new and have been to one other coin site and they weren't much help hoping this community is a little more open minded cause if this coin is really silver I have one of the rarest coins in the world in mint state. Now before I post pics you should know on the PCGS website or is labeled SP66 and on the case it says MS66 but it is registered and is registered as a Norml planchet mix for this coin but I do not see any copper what so ever. I think SP means it was plucked right off of the line and put into a case. Could they have made a mistake from being swamped or lazy? Who knows Maby over worked and swamped. Here's the pics

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

You need to post better pictures of both sides of the entire coin.
The ones you have posted are useless.

I've found that in many cases, the
plastic gasket is thick enough to
deflect the color of the edge of the
    coin.

    I seriously doubt it is on a 90% silver planchet;
someone at PCGS would have noticed it
    immediately.

    Although I agree I can't see a copper core
in your photos, it could possibly be because
    of the plastic gasket.

SP means a specimen strike, but that has nothing to
do with first strikes off the dies, etc.

Don't know where you are located, but if it's
near a coin show that I go to, I'd be glad to
view the holder in-hand and take a good look
    at it.

I'm in L.A., but I thought you might be
in Florida for the FUN show, or Philadelphia
for the next ANA Convention in August.

Looked at your two higher Def. photos, and don't
see much difference from the first ones you posted.

At some point, you might want to take it in to a
coin shop in your area (Louisville?) and ask them
to look at it with their glass.

I wondered if they weighed it. Perhaps it would be worth breaking it out, since it was graded as less than you think, and weigh it to see if clad or 90% before sending it in for a reslabbing. The clad is about 10% lighter.

@Fred Weinberg Is there any chance you might have an empty slab of the same kind that could be weighed and then with a clad dime and silver dime with the different weights subtracted? This would indicate the correct weight of the coin inside the case. (silver or clad) I think I asked this correctly but I'm sure you get where I'm going with this. Thank you. Tom

The surface appears to have a nickel appearance, not the silver coloration one would expect from a 90%. Of course, I am probably wrong.
Edit: And welcome to CoinTalk, Jesse!

  14. What does SMS mean? What's special mint set mean? Sorry for my ignorance
Thank you for your interest. Answer to your question is I do not have a empty slab unfortunately I am from a very small town out in the middle of nowhere and my mom bought this coin in Ohio she noticed it was silver and grabbed it right away. The person that sold it had no idea I believe.

    1. It's SMS on the label, not SP -
SMS means it came out of a Special Mint Set,
which were the only sets issued between 1965 and 1967.

    2. No, I've tried doing that before with an empty holder, etc.
You can't tell if the diff. of a few grains (3.85 grains
or .24 of a gram) means anything, due to the fact
that PCGS has changed it's holder numerous times over
the past years, and although I don't know the weights
of each 'generation' holder, I wouldn't use an empty
holder and a clad or silver dime to make a determination.

Now, that might work on some half dollars or dollars, but
it doesn't work for the smaller denominations.

  16. If you notice that is because The light I was using and the reflection of brown from my table I will take a pic on some white with different lighting. You can see that red also on the plastic on the same side. Thank you for your interest.

  17. Pics on white plus this coin is toning like an orangish color on the outsides in but not on the edge that also reflects like it's copper and I do have poor lighting. When I use my phone camera flash it puts a lot of colors on the coin and the toning don't help. Thank you for the info also to the other person for the info. Also when I put this particular number in the PCGS database it says SP66 by it as a grade and no ms66 so I'm confused
