The reverse rim has what looks like splits or cracks. In places the copper is showing, too. What would this condition be called?
I don't really know all the answers .. as in PLURAL. A coin, such as this one which has been in the wild for 54 years can have more than one particular thing happen to it over it's life time. ==> split plating is often used for the copper plated zinc core cent of 1982 and newer. If you look at the below. You can clearly identify rim wear - the copper color showing through. You can also see the rim which got pushed down also got pushed up to the lower part of the O in dollar. If you think about it, if a coin is used in a vending machine, or gets stuck in the cycle of a laundry mat coin feeder/change machine being used over and over again, a coin can get a tremendous about of edge wear with metal getting pushed all over the place. I think that's the majority of what is happening here all around the edge on both sides.
