I'd have better collection if I hadn't been so cheap. I rarely paid more than face value but was willing to do the hard work to chase down Gems so did acquire multiple examples of most dates. I'd travel to where the Gems were released from the banks when I could find them and found that mint sets were released by zip code in those days so were also trackable. I figured I could always trade Gems for the rarities but now I doubt this is going to happen. The market simply hasn't developed at all the way I expected. I also left a lot of the coins in mint set packaging and the mint set packaging has caused a lot of corrosion.

It took a lot of courage to spend money and time on coins everyone hated and might never be collected. I'm almost certain I spent a couple of rarities including a 1971-D DDR. I had noticed several coins struck with proof reverses and spent those as well. Before 1972 brand new coins would sit in storage for many years and then come out. It seemed a waste to collect them. But in '72 they changed their procedures and coins no longer sat in storage. The clads are all wearing out fairly evenly because the government isn't sitting on them for decades or even years.
