They were produced in early [Feb?] 1965 using unused 1964 dies. They were die trials for replacing the proof sets. 2 to 3 dozen sets were produced and all were presented years back at a show, I think a Superior sale. Have to check my notes.
Thanks for catching that. I'm entering the phase that my memory can't be trusted. It's just a starting point for research.
If you are referring the '64 SMS coins, I don't know of anyone who has claimed that they ever were minted as "sets", or ever intended to be "sets". Merely that the coins were minted. As test strikes, trial strikes, they certainly never would have been minted as sets, but merely as individual coins. And as far as I know anyway, that idea is reinforced by the fact that the various denominations of the '64 SMS coins do not even exist in equal numbers.
I am not a member here (just kinda came across this discussion). I found a 1964 SMS penny in my old collectors book last night. I did not even know this was a thing. It was in very good shape, with a silky sheen and the edges were sharp, thus making it seem (from the side) thicker than any other penny I had come across. I thought it was some sort of fake penny, so I looked it up and here I am. I am now going to be looking to see where I can get this thing graded. Any help would be appreciated. Brian
