Hello everyone I have been seeing talk about SMS coins lately and wondered if mine was possibly an SMS it is a 1964 D half dollar. Here it is and thanks! Thanks, Jacob
How can someone know after the fact, it is was in a SMS or not? Weren't those coins just taken out of circulation? (Nice UNC examples) Are there different markers for the SMS coins? Thank you.
The SMS coins of 1964 were experimental and very few were made. None were struck with a D mint mark just as the 1965, 1966 and 1967 SMS coins were struck without a mint mark.
I have a 1964 Half just like this with no mint mark, do you guys mind if I post it on this thread asking? Thanks, Jacob
In fact no coins, regular coins meant for circulation or SMS coins, were struck with mint marks during the years of 1965-67.
Ok I'm gonna post a couple pics of it here it is. Also are those toning spots? The black stuff. Thanks, Jacob
Yes, even though they were struck at all mints during those years. Mint Director Eva Adams essentially despised coin collectors and blamed them for a majority of the coin shortage. So her act of revenge on the collecting community was to discontinue proofs and offer the "SMS" or Special Mint Set versions as well as remove the mint marks from all coins. Mint marks were finally restored starting in 1968. I figured that that info was a little more than was needed for the OP.
You would think so, but there were a couple of posters who thought because their 1965-67 coin had no mint mark that it met the criteria of being an SMS coin. I think all SMS coins were minted in San Francisco and coins meant for circulation were minted in Philly, Denver and possibly San Francisco as well.
What he was asking was relavent to this thread. Plus its his thread so he can discuss whatever he wants. I dont see the need to start yet another thread discussing the same topic. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
