1964 D with interesting damage

    It is different than what I'm use to. You can see a small mark just above the 4 in the date, in the firld, on the bridge of his nose, through the hair and ending on the W in WE.

    It looks like someone used it as an equipment shim. I've done it on the job a few times. I did a job in the US mint in Philly. I had to service some equipment my company sold. I saw coins being used as shims when lining up equipment. Sometimes they take them out once done and sometimes they become a permanent part. I even saw some coins drilled and used as washers. I've done the same thing at other job sites. In a pinch drilling a hole in a coin or using it as a shim gets the job done and you don't need to run to a hardware store for one washer.

    "Field expedient" use of coins goes back at least to the US Civil War. Many of the smallest coins were holed and used as buttons.
