Actually, more Lincoln cents were minted in Denver during those years than in Philly, but per the Coinage Act of 1965, carried no mint mark.

Because David Hall says it is:

"PCGS has not checked with legal counsel, but of course we would before doing anything, as we did with the 1974 Aluminum cent. Our view is that the 1964-D Peace dollar, if it exists, is one of the most important coins of the 20th Century, and a treasure for the numismatic community. If one does surface, and if there are no legal issues with us viewing the coin, we are confident our experts would be capable of authenticating the coin,” said David Hall, president of Collectors Universe, parent company of PCGS."

The '74 aluminum cent is one, it was slabbed by two companies, ICG first and then PCGS. And no, it is most definitely not legal to own.

Think for a minute, what is the government's reason for the '33 double eagles being illegal to own ? It's quite simple, it's because they say the coins were not monetized, were not released into circulation by the mint. Now how many other coins are there like that ?

All trial strikes and all patterns would meet that criteria. The '94-S dimes, the '13 nickels, the 1804 dollars, the experimental cents (any of them), the '22 High Relief business strike Peace, the list goes on. And all of these coins have been slabbed, and their existence and their owners are well known. And they are all illegal to own based on the criteria of their not having been monetized by the mint.

But the govt. chooses not to do anything about it. They could, they just don't.

Just because they are easy to buy doesn't mean they are legal to own. If you read my last post, patterns pre-1887 are legal to own, but only after the mint was sued back in 1910. I would even argue that the mint still believes they are illegal to own. Try owning a modern day pattern. Not going to happen...at least not openly.

You can say it all you want, that is not going to make it true! :foot-mouth:

Time for a reality check .......Pattern coined before 1965 are legal to own, are al least according to the "Coinage Act of 1965". There are other US Patterns made after 1965 that are owned privately and some of the owners are quite "openly" about it.
