I am new to coins, but have many I saved as a child. I recently found I have a 1963 D Lincoln Penny with the W in "WE" extending to a point up over the top left of the E, clearly extending above the upper arc of lettering. Is this some sort of error? Maybe a cracked die? I searched images and such with Google and found nothing like it. Any info or guesses as to what it is, how common/rare, or its value would be appreciated.
First, welcome to the neighborhood @Grakkl ! What you have is post-mint damage (PMD). It is a gouge that extends across the "W" onto the rim. Chris
It, unfortunately, appears to be a hit or the like. Even if not what you had hoped, please do consider it a learning experience. Welcome to the forum.
I was having a "Can't see the forest for the trees" moment. Once I saw that line I couldn't divert my eyes slightly left to see the remnants of the W that are plainly visible. Just needed someone to slap me back down to reality. Thank you! lol
