I don't collect nickels but I do save them when they look interesting and I'm just recently investigating them so, I'm not sure if this is a DD or not, it's on both sides.. I'm leaning towards die deterioration. Any opinions? 20231004_120131.jpg 20231004_120234.jpg 20231004_120403.jpg

Yes, it is die deterioration or die erosion: the die pair was used well past a normal cycle. Who knows? Maybe the Mint employee fell asleep at the switch on a graveyard shift. When he woke up he stopped the stamping press, changed out to a new pair of dies and resumed production…(and promptly fell back asleep).

Yeah, well, none of us on this site collect coins, but we do "actively save" them; & some of them are not actually that interesting...:D:joyful::jawdrop:
