I don't collect nickels but I do save them when they look interesting and I'm just recently investigating them so, I'm not sure if this is a DD or not, it's on both sides.. I'm leaning towards die deterioration. Any opinions?
Yes, it is die deterioration or die erosion: the die pair was used well past a normal cycle. Who knows? Maybe the Mint employee fell asleep at the switch on a graveyard shift. When he woke up he stopped the stamping press, changed out to a new pair of dies and resumed production…(and promptly fell back asleep). …imo…Spark
