On the word liberty, the b and the e are filled in, so what is this called and how did it happen?

    Nice find! That is called a Die Chip.
    It's very commonly found in Cents minted in the 1950's especially 1957 and 1959.
    I have about 8 in my collection.

    The small break between the B and the E would of evolved into what is known as a BIE variety. Another kind of Die Break.
