Displaced? You mean "misplaced" don't you? Until the 90's, mintmarks were punched into the dies by hand. Take a look at Kennedy half dollars from the 70's, and you'll find the mintmarks all over the place. Chris
No it is touching the 9 witch makes it displaced if it was separated it would be a misplaced mint mark.
Do you have documentation to back that up or are you just kiddin' I posted something similar back in July of last year... https://www.cointalk.com/threads/1952-d-lwc-mint-mark-seems-really-high.248906/ While the D wasn't touching any of the numbers in the date, it was in such a drastically different place than the 50 or so I had looked at previously that it did catch my eye. But after researching what rickmp (and what Chris and jallengomez) reiterated here it is indeed a possibility for the mint mark to be kinda all over the place during the years that they were punched into the working dies. This link has some good info in it about the evolution of the mint mark, its location and which point of the hubbing\die creation process it moved to through out the Mints history. http://doubleddie.com/58201.html
I thought misplaced was lost and maybe found again? And displaced was in the wrong spot or place where it should have been? Old school maybe.
"Misplaced" is a term used in numismatics to describe a mint mark that has been punched outside it's general location, with the word "general" being very important here. As we've already stated, anything in the field below the date is considered to be in the "general location." This is still the case even if that mint mark is right at the edge of a number in the date.
True - "displaced" meaning: "to move or put out of the proper place". Well with hand struck mint marks to the die there is no so called proper place as long as it's under and close to the middle of the date. And it ain't misplaced cause it is, once again, under the date and close to the middle. But Ide keep it just for the heck of it!
I am a misplaced Hawaiian. I always wanted to live there, and should have been born there, but here I am .. In NY. Therefore I am misplaced.
