When grease has made its way into an incused element, it can also collect minutes pieces of dirt, dust, sawdust, etc. When a planchet is struck, this compacts all of the foreign material together. If more grease and debris continue to build up and is compressed by continual strikes, it will eventually fill the entire incused element, making it "disappear" as if it wasn't even on the die. In actuality, there is no element to "strike through" the grease and debris.  The only thing the writer did say accurately, was the last sentence.
