Ok now I'm confussed. Here's what I read on this site; http://coins.ha.com/c/ref/questions.zx Grease Struck Through Occasionally, coins will be struck with some feature missing, generally due to grease or some other foreign object between the die and planchet. When a foreign object rests on the die, the detail in that area of the coin becomes filled and does not show up on the coin. This type of error is very common and commands only a slight premium.
I think it's just one of those terms that has become accepted over the years. "Struck through grease" and "grease filled die" refers to the same thing.
They really didn't take the time to explain it too well, and the writer probably didn't think about what he/she was saying. When one of the features is "missing" as they put it, it is caused by grease filling the incused design element. "When a foreign object rests on the die" is misleading. When grease has made its way into an incused element, it can also collect minutes pieces of dirt, dust, sawdust, etc. When a planchet is struck, this compacts all of the foreign material together. If more grease and debris continue to build up and is compressed by continual strikes, it will eventually fill the entire incused element, making it "disappear" as if it wasn't even on the die. In actuality, there is no element to "strike through" the grease and debris. The only thing the writer did say accurately, was the last sentence. It is a common error which commands only a slight premium. I hope this helps. Chris
Hey, you guys go ahead and call it what you want. I only thought that you would like to know that there is a difference between a strikethrough and a grease-filled die. Chris
I appreciate the clarification.:thumb: Sometimes we give things names without explanation and that can become confusing to newbies.
