I was putting some coins away this weekend and noticed a 1955 Bugs Bunny Franklin half that has some neon green/blue junk on it mostly around the edges. Is this the dreaded PVC residue I hear about? I put it in the 2" x 2" it is in, but I don't know what it came in whenever i acquired it. Should this come off w/ acetone? It's in a bath now and I'll post an after pic in a day or so.

The only note I have with is that I paid $9.50 in November of 2015.

    Thanks IMG_4768.JPG IMG_4769.JPG IMG_4770.JPG

It's PVC. The green will come off but it will take more than one bath. Don't rub it with anything. It will look much better when you finish.

Add some 99% alcohol to the acetone also. It will help remove some of the haze.

Really just one. I took it out 2 or 3 times, rinsed it off, and put it back in.

Acetone is good to get rid of the PVC but it ain't gonna cure them bucked teef.

I'd still like to see it turned correctly.

Isopropyl yes. I use a 50/50 mixture for haze, seems to cut through a lot of it. Electronic shops usually carry it.

You should be able to get it at Walmart.

You can get 91% Iso Alcohol at Wal-Mart.

I mentioned the 99%, in another thread on another forum, and a very adamant chemist said the 91% is good enough and gave me a whole bunch of reasons why. I have only used the 99% iso on my coins. So far the only places I have been able to find 99% is at electronics stores. It helped remove some light hazing. Some of the mint sets or Ikes that have heavy hazing I don't really see any difference no matter what I use or how long it soaks.

I am using 40 Volume Hydrogen Peroxide on some coins. It bubbles dirt off so well that you can't leave a top on the container or the pressure will pop it off. I'd try it on some less important coins first. I think you can only get 40 volume from a beauty supply house.

I do at least 3 separate baths with acetone and use fresh acetone each time. Each bath is a few hours.

This has been extremely educational for me as it’s all new territory. I did a 2nd acetone wash and it looks even better. Can’t really tell with pictures but it’s nice. I’ll have to get some IPA and play with that a little as well at some point.
