I need to know more about mint mark position and date errors. On this coin the mint mark is touching the letter. Also there is a tail on the letter five. Can anyone explain these errors to me. And do they have any value? Thanks Big Ed
Ed, The tail on the 5 is from a die chip. Chips are common on the digits of the date on wheat cents. As for the mint mark, up until 1990 all mint marks were punched into the dies by hand. The target zone was the general area underneath the date, so it's not unusual to see them like this. The 1954-S cents seemed to have a preponderance of mint marks that were touching or almost touching the date.
I have a 1954 S wheat penny that is missing 3 letters on the back. The M,E and the S. Can you shed some light,? Is it worth anything?
