It's 65 years old and it's suffering from circulation. I too am 65 tomorrow and I look and feel the same. Lol
Maybe some environmental damage as well. Even though it's old, it is worn and common. 5 cents, no premium. The 1954-S is a lower mintage and even though there's no market for it, those I will keep. But the 1954-D is a spender unless it is in excellent condition.
It's absolutely the correct forum! Many times new collectors with questions about a strange looking coins are more concerned with value than anything else. They create threads in the What's it Worth forum which is very annoying.
Yeah, that brown spot on the reverse looks like something acidic landed on it and sat for a while. The brown spots on the edge are probably the same. Sometimes acid on a nickel dissolves away the nickel part of the alloy, leaving the copper behind. That's why corroded nickels are often brown.
Oops sorry I said D when I meant Philly. This nickel is worth 5 cents, it's not worth having inspected. Spend it.
