Noticed these marks on Lincolns jacket appears to be a word. On future zoomed in pics I can almost make out some other type of coin stamped on the penny. Let me know what you think, I appreciate all opinions.
It's not another coin stamped on your Cent. Those are not letters. It is known as a Lamination Peel (De-Lamination) a sort of Planchet Flaw Common occurrence on Wheat Cents
Is it safe to assume you found the coin this way and that you're not responsible for its present condition?
Don't ask, don't tell. Actually we do need to tell people not to clean coins unless they know what they are doing!
I was just going through Mason jar of change and stumbled on it and immediately noticed the jacket up by the collar and noticed what I took a pic of
I was just looking at the pic again and noticed that sort of smear over the tops of some of the letters in the top obverse motto. In the beginnings of my forays into coin collecting, when I found stuff like that, I thought I had found the Holy Grail of double dies. Then as I researched further on LCRC and Coin Talk and other sites, I began to learn about machine doubling, etc. Man, were my hopes dashed and I had to keep my day job. Guys, what is the truly technical term for those smears? Do they ever get to a position of value or are they just basically "Show and Tell"? Thanks
If the doubling is flat, it's highly likely it is Machine Doubling. http://www.error-ref.com/machine-doubling/ Most of the time there's no premium. I don't know if there's a premium if it's an acute case like the profile MD they show on that page.
