1946 Nickels were only made of nickel. Silver stopped in 1945. Silver nickels have a large mint mark on the back over Monticello.

Does not look silver. It's easy to spot after you have seen a few.

Take it to a coin shop or jeweler and have it tested for silver.. If it is come back and give us the results.. I don't totally agree with "sound tests" o_O

Thanks everyone! I know that the 1945 nickle was supposed to be the last silver! And I definitely will take to a jeweler to test!

depending upon how your drop something, how it hits and what you drop it on; you can make it sound like anything you want it to sound like.

There are a few super rare 1946 nickels that were accidentally struck on older war time silver planchets.
The odds of yours being silver is a powerball winning ticket.
Yours just looks like a worn nickel. The silver ones generally don't show that type of patina, and toning.

And it is NICKEL, not nickle.

Quick and super easy way to tell if it's silver is to take a white tissue and hold it up to the coin in question with a light source on it. Silver will appear bright through the tissue while all other metals will show as dull. Use a couple of coins for comparison and you will see what I mean.
