Hello All, been a while! Hey, got a few questions on this 46 S mint mark, is it Trumpet Tail or Sans Serif, is it inverted or normal? The mint mark looks a little strange to me and I can't pin down why. Thanks!
MMS-006MMS-006 (Ball Serif, with flat spot on lower ball) It's not Inverted and is a Regular ( scarce ) Mint-Mark . http://varietyvista.com/01a LC Doubled Dies Vol 1/San Francisco Mintmark Styles.htm
Awesome! Thanks soooooooooooooooo much Rick! I knew it looked diff, thanks for educating me, never heard of the "Ball Serif". Super interesting! Being that it's scarce, does that add any additional value? This is what it's attached too
According to this thread, it was used on 5 Centavos for Colombia, the 1 Centavo for El Salvador and both the 1 Peso and 50 Centavos for the Phillipines. San Francisco does not typically put a mint mark on foreign coins, but since the Phillipines are a US territory, they do have the mint mark and yes, it is a ball serif. http://coinauctionshelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10931
Rick, again thanks so much for your info! So, would this be consider a "New Variety" for a 46? The only listed ball serif for 46 it the inverted one, or am I just dreamin big Again, thanks so much for your response, you rock!
A while back I had accumulated ~6 BU rolls of 1946-S Cents, and made a tally of the 3 mintmark types. This was the result: Total Coins: 255 Trumpet Tail: 150 (59%) Sans Serif: 70 (27%) Ball Serif: 35 (14%) I found a few nice toners and some RPMs as well, but no inverted MM. I have only ever found one inverted MM in all my searches. If you're interested in seeing the toners and RPMs, see them here: http://www.lincolncentforum.com/forum/showthread.php?28968
