That isn't the ball serif S (mms-006). It is the serif S (mms-004). The ball serif looks like this...per The Lincoln Cent Resource site.
At that point in time, if a mint ran out of dies they would often borrow some from another mint and stamp there MM over top of the MM of where they got the die. The 1946 S/D is a result of this. Most of the time the S would completely stamp out the D. However, some of the D's were not completely erased. I am familiar with the variety and what type of S was used on the one variety that is known. I am not claiming that this cent is the omm-001. I am HOPING, it will be omm-002.
